PERSONALITY:
What have you done to my beautiful self?

While humans are known to shriek in anger and even turn to violence at the slightest change done to their appearance without their explicit consent – Diaval reacts to the complete transformation of his physical form with a quirked brow, slight disorientation, and two lines of complaint. He changes his tune instantly once it's pointed out to him that the transformation happened to have saved his life. He takes most of his life, for all its twists and turns, in stride. It doesn't seem that he has ever expected to have an overabundance of control over it – he moves seamlessly from being his own master to serving under a fairy he's only just met, never failing in his new duties. For 16 years he is her constant companion, observing her, and completing every task – even those he finds distasteful. The one time he expresses his displeasure with a task he is asked to perform happens after the fact – he complains about having being changed into the form of a wolf, an animal he detests. But while he was wearing said form, he completed his mission without hesitation nor complaint. Even when he stands up to her at the end, and begs her to give Aurora every chance of escaping the curse, he still doesn't strike out on his own, takes charge of his life and does what he thinks is right. He only offers his council and criticism, and acts once it is taken. Once it is taken, however, he shies away from no action. He walks into danger, attacks soldiers as a raven, and burns them alive as a dragon. He acts bravely, surely, and ruthlessly.

In return for saving my life, I am your servant

Much like the Seelie, Diaval believes in paying his debts. His life was meant to be ended when he was captured by a farmer, and painfully. Maleficent gifted him whatever time comes after that, so all that time belongs as much to her as it does to him. She doesn't need to ask for anything in return, he offers it freely and willingly, and never once tries to back out of said service.

Oh, come on, that's funny
Diaval doesn't relate to his mistress's sense of humor. He doesn't find joy in pranks and torments. The one time he really starts laughing is when Maleficent, someone who he knows better than anyone else in the world, someone who has maintained an air of severity and inspires fear in those creatures she's meant to protect and had once called her friends, is hit by a bit of mud in the face. The humor there isn't that someone was hit by mud – he doesn't laugh when Maleficent makes a rain storm indoors soak the pixies who raise Aurora in retribution of their neglectful rearing of said child – it's that a person who has been wrought with anger and vengeance for over a decade is finding joy once more.

He has an extremely optimistic view of the world around him. He doesn't believe in lost causes, he believes in true love despite having spent over 16 years in the company of cynic. He is a loving, caring creature – he feeds and rocks baby Aurora to sleep, plays with her when she grows – above and beyond the bare necessities she needs to survive.

From a bird's eye view, Diaval has watched over Maleficent and Aurora. He observes the fairy world and the human world, he learns to read them, understand them. He spends a good chunk of the movie observing, rather than getting involved; while Aurora is playing with the creatures of the moors, while he's sent off to spy, when he observes Maleficent transform the lives of everyone around her. He doesn't mind it, he never complains about his place; despite his human form, he isn't human nor fairy, and doesn't really mesh with either species, despite growing fond of both.

COURT ALLIANCE & REASONING: Seelie. He follows the Seelie code almost to the letter.
- Death before dishonor – at the end of the film he follows his mistress into near certain death to protect her and the princess they both came to care for.
- Love conquers all – he has watched Maleficent's love for Aurora save her from her misery, hanged on for dear life on the fact that true love can break Aurora's curse, and watched it work.
- Never forget a debt – when his life is saved, he instantly repays his debt, of his own accord, by binding himself into servitude.
ABILITIES:
Diaval's abilities depend on the form he is transformed into. On his own, he can't do a thing of magic, so when he is a man – his abilities do not differ from those of any other able-bodied young man. When he is a raven, his abilities do not differ from those of any other raven, and so on. He cannot transform of his own accord.
INVENTORY: the clothes on his back (stolen off a scarecrow's back some 16 years ago). That is all.

If you mean to trap me in this form and make a servant of me at least have the decency to save my life first! Fairies, you always let the power go to your heads. I suppose you think this is all very funny. [ Maleficent certainly would, he imagines. She always finds the cruelest things amusing. All that's missing is that this form that he has grown somewhat used to will be taken from him as well and replaced with that of a stinky mangy mutt – and come to think of it, if they're anything like Maleficent they're probably all thinking the same and -- ] Don't you dare!
